I frequently get asked about my career choice as a nail technician and if this is something I have always wanted to do. My answer is no, this is not something I ever truly saw myself doing. Growing up, I was never drawn to nail care. In fact, there had only been a small number of occasions where I got my nails done.
From a young age, I knew for certain I would be great at something; I just never knew what that something was. What I did know was that desk jobs were uninteresting to me and had become tiresome. I took the bold step of leaving my job to temporarily work at a bar while researching my options for educational programs offered at UCAS.
My three potential paths were nail technician, esthetician, and cosmetologist. Ultimately, I opted for the nail technician route due to its shorter process. The following five months proved to be one of the most difficult and tiring periods of my life. I was balancing the responsibilities of being a single mom, attending day-time classes, and working nights that left me with 3-4 hours to sleep before repeating the cycle.
Today, I'm excited to say that the risk I undertook was worth it and has proven to be highly rewarding. Additionally, I've discovered that not only am I passionate about what I do but ended I up being pretty good at it!
